Why Singing is Really Good For You: The Therapeutic Benefits of Singing

Music's various benefits have been widely documented throughout the years, helping us understand what happens in our brain and our body when we learn, listen to, or play music. In fact, a growing amount of evidence has supported the potential use of music in medicine.

A 2010 study titled The Therapeutic Effects of Singing in Neurological Disorders reviewed evidence that examines whether singing can be used to treat some of the speech-motor abnormalities associated with various neurological conditions, including stuttering, Parkinsons disease, acquired brain lesions, and autism.

The study outlines the general physiological effects of singing:

  • Vocal stimulation through singing affects the musculature associated with respiration, articulation, resonance, and phonation. Other research has suggested that singing increases respiratory muscle strength.
  • Professional singers have shown better cardio-physiological fitness directly as a result of changes in their cardiovascular and pulmonary systems caused by intensive singing practice.
  • It cited at 2009 study that showed improvement in the pulmonary functions of chronically ill patients who participated in weekly singing classes.
Singing has also shown to be significantly useful in neurological disorders, particularly in addressing associated speech-motor difficulties. Continuous singing helps to increase the connectedness between syllables and words. Vocalizing or singing engages a larger bihemispheric network in the brain than does speaking, and therefore facilitates articulation, which could help with stuttering.

The study concludes a number of possible mechanisms underlying the desired effects of singing when it comes to improving symptoms of the aforementioned neurological conditions, as well as the selection of appropriate interventions, and recovery assistance.
