Nathan Holaway

Biography

Music educator, Nathan Holaway, has been an active teacher for the past 15 years. An advocate for music education, Mr. Holaway believes that all children should have the opportunity to study music. Before relocating to Northeast Ohio, Mr. Holaway served as Director of Bands at Schofield Middle School in Aiken, South Carolina. Mr. Holaway developed curriculum for Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced level bands, as well as General Music courses. His students were regularly selected to participate in South Carolina Region and All-State Band clinics, as well as district-wide honors bands. Recently, Mr. Holaway had several beginning band students selected to participate in the Aiken County Da Capo Honor Band. Mr. Holaway has also been employed as an Adjunct Faculty member at two major universities and has been a guest lecturer for music history classes. At the collegiate level, he has had ensembles selected to perform at the Jazz Education Network's National Conference. In addition to teaching, Mr. Holaway maintains an active career as a performing musician as he believes that the experiences gained as a performer are invaluable in the classroom environment. Mr. Holaway is comfortable performing in all styles of music including, but not limited to, jazz, rock, R&B, soul, pop, swing, and blues. Mr. Holaway attended the University of Alabama where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a Masters of Music in Jazz and Arranging. Most recently, he received his Master of Arts in Teaching from the University of South Carolina. Mr. Holaway has also completed music education coursework at Jacksonville State University (AL). Mr. Holaway's past teachers include Dr. Jayme Taylor, Dr. Andrew Gowan, Dr. Jeremy Lane, Dr. Gail V. Barnes, Mr. Bryson Borgstedt, Mr. Tom Wolfe, Dr. Jon Noffsinger, and Dr. Chris Culver. Holaway has also had the deep honor of working with and participating in clinics with many jazz legends, including Ornette Coleman, Lee Konitz, Phil Woods, Bud Shank, John Zorn, Frank Morgan, Randy Brecker, Bob Mintzer, Giacomo Gates, Gene Bertoncini, Marcus Roberts, Marcus Printup, Branford Marsalis, Joey DeFrancesco, Eldar, Kirk Whalum, and Roger Pemberton. In addition to playing the saxophone, Holaway also plays the flute, clarinet, trumpet, piano and acoustic guitar. Holaway is an avid jazz-history lover and has written for jazz publications such as All About Jazz (http://www.allaboutjazz.com) and Jazz Review (http://www.jazzreview.com). Mr. Holaway is an active member of the National Association for Music Education, the Jazz Education Network, and the Ohio Music Education Association. Mr. Holaway holds a Four Year Resident Educator Multi Age (P-12) License through the Ohio Department of Education. Besides music, Holaway has a deep affinity for coffee, fedoras, and old movies. When hes not working, Holaway enjoys spending time with his lovely and talented wife Katie and their cat, Nica.
