STEVE WOOD

Biography

Jazz saxophonist Steve Wood has been performing and teaching in the Detroit area for more than 30 years. After a period of study at Oakland University with Marvin "Doc" Holladay, and at Marcus Belgrave's Jazz Development oWorkshop, Steve embarked on a professional career which has included two European tours with the Paul Keller Orchestra, recordings with Don Mayberry, Scott Gwinnell, Ron English, Bill Heid, The Toledo Jazz Orchestra, Eddie Nuccilli, and Brad Felt, and two cd's of his own, "Unanswerable Questions" on the Alembic Arts label, and "Deep Woods" on Corridor Records. His quintet won the Hennessy Jazz Search in 1990, and he has received the Michigan Council for the Arts Creative Artist Grant and two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships. Performance credits include appearances with Sammy Davis Jr., Aretha Franklin, The Four Tops, Thad Jones, Jon Faddis, Kenny Burrell, Terence Blanchard, John Clayton, and Mose Allison. Steve teaches at a number of music studios throughout metro Detroit, and holds teaching positions at the Cranbrook Academy, Michigan State University and the Arts League of Michigan.
