THE MAGIC OF MUSIC, AS SEEN IN THE MOVIES - Part 2

Young@Heart (2007)

Should I Stay or Should I Go, I Wanna Be Sedated, Stayin' Alive.  Punk classics, an iconic anthem for the disco era...and rollicking rallying cries for a choir of 80 year olds.

What began as an arts project in 1982 at a center for the elderly in Massachusetts turned into a popular vocal group that has since toured Australia, Europe, Canada, and sang for royalty in Norway. Stephen Walkers documentary, Young@Heart, is a testament to determination, joy and learning to sing at any age. The movie follows a group of elderly singers during an intense two months of practice and preparations for their very first performance at the Academy Theater in Northampton.

Viewers of Young@Heart get intimate insights into singers daily lives, aches, pains and all. More than one member admits to preferring show tunes and opera, yet their willingness to learn unexpected songs (think Sonic Youth, Talking Heads, Radiohead) gives us a veritable visual of the transformative powers of music.
